How will you get to heaven when this life is over? Some believe that God will look over a person’s life and weigh the good against the bad. Perhaps if there is more good than bad, God will allow that person to escape eternal judgment and gain access into heaven. But is that justice? Can sin just go unpunished?

For the wages of sin is death… (Romans 3:23)

The death that occurs because of sin is two-fold. First, it speaks of a physical death that everyone encounters at some point. Romans 5:12 speaks about death being a result of Adam’s sin and how sin and death spread to everyone. But there is a far worse consequence of sin: spiritual death. This isn’t talking about a person ceasing to exist. It’s an eternal separation from God. Surely a person can just live a moral life and everything will be okay with God, right?

For by the works of the law, no human being will be justified… (Romans 3:20)

Can you justify yourself? God obliterates any such notion. Whatever you’re doing in this life, no matter how noble and pure it appears, nothing you do can justify your soul before the righteous Judge. God is just and he will pour out his wrath on all sin. Can you escape this wrath? Not without God intervening.

For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. (Romans 5:6)

Now we get to heart of the matter. You see, God provides the way for salvation. It doesn’t come through spirituality or karma. Church attendance and giving to the poor does nothing for justice. Only the perfect Lamb can bear God’s wrath. Only Jesus Christ.

The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel. (Mark 1:15)

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. (Ephesians 2:8-9)

Repenting is like a soldier who surrenders and lays down his weapons. He gives himself up to the opposing army. Will you give yourself up? If you give yourself up to God, i.e. repent, and believe in Jesus Christ through faith, your sins will be forgiven and you’ll receive the gift of eternal life. There is no magic formula or prayer that saves. Repent and believe in Jesus.
