Though Vile as He: A Thanksgiving Message

Nothing gets my blood pumping more than when I hear about serious child abuse/neglect, especially when it’s sexual abuse or when it leads to immense suffering or death. To me, these offenders are among the most depraved people on earth, along with ISIS. (more…)

Paul, Boxing, and MMA

boxing

Was the Apostle Paul a fan of boxing? We can’t say with certainty that he was. But we know he understood the sport.

So I do not run aimlessly; I do not box as one beating the air.
-1 Cor. 9:26 ESV

In this passage, Paul used two sports to describe metaphorically what the Christian faith is like: running and boxing. It seems strange to me that he would use an inherently sinful sport as a positive analogy for the Christian faith. A better explanation is that Paul apparently saw a redeeming value in sports (the training and disciplining of one’s body and competing and winning a prize, to name a few) and in his mind, combat sports1 (like boxing) were honorable endeavors. Newborn Baby Left for Dead

A newborn baby abandoned by her parents and left for dead was utterly hopeless. But because of the compassion and mercy of a local Mexican man on his way to work, the baby was not only rescued from certain death, the man plans on adopting her into his family as one of his own.

What a picture of the Gospel!

But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved…
[Eph. 2:4-5]

In love he predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace…
[Eph. 1:5-6]

Wisdom in a Foolish World

old_man_reading

I would like to say what an honor it is to be guest blogging on GroovyChristianso thank you, Chris. Like many of you who may be reading this, I am a husband, a father, and a follower of Jesus Christ. One duty—my main duty—is to shepherd my family (1 Tim. 3:5). As men of God, we are called to a very profound ministry to not only our wives, but also our children: “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.” (Proverbs 22:6). They need knowledge and they need wisdom. If your children are anything like mine, they need wisdom in this foolish world. They are nonetheless a gift from God (Psalm 127:3) and need training.

What Is the Gospel?

What is the gospel? Every Christian needs to be able to succinctly and sufficiently answer this question to anyone—it contains the very keys to eternal life.

Let me offer my answer:

The gospel is the good news that God saves sinners who repent and believe in Jesus.

I have this memorized. My two daughters, ages five and six right now, have this memorized. It comes out of our mouths instinctively with almost no effort. But memorizing a canned response is only the first part. You must be able to expound upon its meaning.

What Does Brittany Maynard’s Self-Murder Proclaim?

angel_of_grief

A young Oregon woman stricken with a brain tumor has ended her own life this weekend with the aid of doctors. Two questions come to mind when I learned of this terrible news. First, what does the bible say about suffering? And second, what does Ms. Maynard’s suicide (self-murder) proclaim? (more…)

What’s Wrong With Violence Against Women?

Christians have to identify the inconsistency right away—making absolute moral claims without an absolute authority. Why is it wrong for men to to be violent towards women? Are we not just evolved animals? What right does one animal have to impose morality on another? Fortunately as Christians, we have an absolute moral authority to which we can appeal. It is God who has made men and women in His image. When a person violates a woman’s (or man’s) body, the person violates an image-bearer of God. It is wrong because God has declared so. A worldview without God leads to moral and intellectual absurdity.

Will Those Who Have Never Heard the Gospel Go to Hell?

This is a commonly asked question:

Will those who have never heard the Gospel go to hell?

To help understand the issue, let’s explore a hypothetical scenario and then examine what Scripture has to say. (more…)

Claire, the Lawyer

I’m pretty sure Claire is going to be a lawyer when she grows up. My daughter, less than a month shy of four years old, has mastered the art of inquisition. We were on our way back from the park this evening when I asked her what will happen when we get home. (my typical tactic to get her to “agree” to her bedtime routine) (more…)

Windows 7 Calculator

Screenshot of Windows 7 Calculator

I’ve been using Windows 7 for about a year now and I just realized today that there are additional features. In addition to the Standard, Scientific, Programmer, and Statistics modes (which I already knew about–I use the Programmer mode regularly), there are various conversions and worksheets that can be accessed at the bottom of the View menu. Unit conversion, date calculation, and mortgage payments are a few of the functions available from within the calculator program. Now I don’t have to Google “10 kilometers in miles” to figure out the real distance of a 10K.
